BAS PID Tuning Lab

A loop that hunts, crawls or overshoots looks the same on a graphic: “it’s at setpoint, mostly.” The trend tells you which. This lab runs real HVAC loops live, with a trend of setpoint, PV, command and actuator feedback. Tune freely in the sandbox, or work thirteen loop faults where tuning is sometimes the answer and sometimes the trap.

  1. Read the work order and watch the trend
  2. Analyze it, check the settings and the actuator
  3. Make the call, fix it, verify with a test run

Choose a loop

Tuning sandbox

Pick a loop, step the setpoint, throw a disturbance at it and tune until you like the trend. Nothing is scored.

TutorialThe next place to look is outlined, and the coach explains what the trend is telling you. It moves on when you do it.
PracticeSame loop, no outlines. Collect the evidence, make the call, fix it. Verify runs a test with your settings and grades the result.
What’s modelledVelocity-form PI(D) with deadband, limits, PV filter and setpoint ramp; actuator stroke time and stiction; process lag and dead time.

The PID block is in the book

BAS Logic covers PID blocks alongside the rest of block programming: loop action, enables, limits and why loops misbehave. Free reading: Hunting valves and dampers.
